British Airways First Class
Without a moment's delay I was wafted on to BA27 and into my private cabin, where the world revolves around you. Anna, the comforting Dutch stewardess, immediately twirled around us, dispensing drinks and collecting coats. So private and padded was my booth that I felt I should be making a furtive phone call. I looked around the corner to check I wasn't alone, because when sitting down, I couldn't see a soul. In spite of grazing on crisps and sandwiches back in the lounge, I eagerly anticipated an la carte dinner being wheeled out soon after our 9.30pm take-off. Wrong. It was gone 11pm before anyone mentioned food. By then I was pyjama-clad and yawning. Too tired for 45 movies but too hungry for sleep, I worked my way through salad and passable chicken in lemon sauce with egg-fried rice, and then immediately suffered the remorse of the late-night diner. I should have chosen the pasta and someone to occupy my tiny visitor's seat. After dinner, snores were the only sounds, so I drowned them out with something soothing on the headphones and stabbed my finger repeatedly at a variety of electronic buttons until the seat flattened out. My five foot eight frame fitted nicely, if snugly, but all too soon I discovered that a flat airline seat turns turbulence into a show-jumping experience, most alarming even for a placid passenger. Heads popped up over partitions like prairie dogs, as nearly everyone woke up. Anna immediately produced soothing cups of tea and we all went back to sleep. On reawakening hours later I was greeted with the welcoming sight of breakfast - eggs to order and fresh coffee. But any sleeping dogs were left to lie in, which meant either a mad scurry to use the leather-clad changing seat in the loo before the plane descended on Chek Lap Kok, or facing the ignominy of disembarking in a romper suit. Turbulence apart, a very comfortable flight with splendidly unobtrusive service. We landed 55 minutes ahead of schedule.
